A Man of Vision—Don Yaussy
Otterbein is blessed with more than its share of people with vision. A prime example of this is soft-spoken and gentle Don Yaussy, a kind and generous man.
Don looks beyond the obvious and sees possibilities. For instance, in 1995 he was among the many people who helped establish Otterbein North Shore. He participated in surveys and planning meetings to determine exactly what was most needed in the new retirement community that everyone in the Lakeside-Marblehead area was anxious to see built.
Don continued his commitment as one of Otterbein North Shore's first board members. In 1996 when North Shore opened, he and his wife, Phyllis, were among the first to move into one of the new patio homes. After raising three children, traveling, and moving around for Don's work as a minister and Global Ministries fundraiser, he and Phyllis were ready to relax and enjoy the community amenities and peaceful location, which is just a stone's throw from Lake Erie.
"This is a caring community, especially the people who live here," Don says. "We know and care about each other. The staff are excellent; always responsive." More than ever, Don appreciated the closeness of friends and neighbors when Phyllis was ill. He cared for her in their home with the help of devoted and loving friends and family. Although Phyllis has passed away, Don maintains his deep friendships and continues to be at home at North Shore. Recently, Don and his friend Carol Summey held a commitment ceremony.
Don feels so strongly about Otterbein North Shore's mission and ministry that he has designated North Shore to receive a bequest in his will. "I'm at home here. I've had a good experience here and it's important to me that the Otterbein North Shore ministry continues," he says.
